REVIEW: Bad Blood - John Carreyrou

Writer: SharnSharn

Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes take ‘fake it ‘til you make it’ to a whole new stratosphere in Carreyrou’s perfectly crafted account of the rise and fall of this tech giant.

Bad Blood takes you right inside of one of the most promising tech start-ups of the decade. John’s investigative journalism exemplifies the power and importance of media. Carreyrou reports the journey of Tech giant Theranos: a company promising to provide comprehensive reports of your health using only a finger prick amount of blood. Elizabeth Holmes and her company secured a $10 billion evaluation and worked alongside healthcare professionals and giant corporations, such as Wallgreens. But all the while the technology that Theranos was promising was falling short, and Elizabeth was doing everything in her power to sweep it under the rug. John Carreyrou was instrumental in the collapse of Theranos with his original Wall Street Journal article exploring the pitfalls of this tech giant and he is the perfect guide for this unbelievable story.

As someone how has never worked in the tech world (and most likely will never), the idea of Silicon Valley and fervent start-up companies seems a world away. I was taken by the candid straightforward nature of John’s writing and the meticulous facts he presented. I did not want to put this book down; I was absolutely perplexed by the façade that Holmes was able to create and cultivate. Even with my background in the biological sciences, I was drawn into the fantasy that Holmes was spinning even when the science wasn’t lining up. Bad Blood is a must-read for anyone with any interest in medical sciences, finance, tech companies or really anyone who is fascinated with our ability to ignore red flags when presented with a charismatic leader.
