REVIEW: The Night Tiger - Yangsze Choo

Writer: SharnSharn

This book that takes place in the 1930s’ in colonial Malaysia and it follows the story of a young woman named Ji Lin who is apprenticing to become a dress maker. However she moonlights as a dancer in order to pay off her mother’s gambling debts in secret from her family. One day she meets a young man at one of her dancing gigs and steals a small jar from his pocket which contains a human finger! Gross! She ends up going on this whole adventure to figure out where this finger came from and what she is density to do. Ji Lin gets throw into a world of Chinese fortunes and mythes. Meanwhile you are trying to figure out if the tiger in the story is a real man eating tiger or a man who becomes a tiger.

This book took a long time for me to read personally. You enter a wholeness world, not just culturally but also in terms magical realism.

I felt that the plot wasn’t compelling enough to grasp my attention for a long period of time. But I do thing that this is a book the vast majority of people with really enjoy!
