REVIEW: The Sun and Her Flowers - Rupi Kaur

Writer: SharnSharn

I have a difficult time with rating books in general, but also understand why they’re important and often ratings help me determine whether or not I would read a book – especially here. HOWEVER, I don’t feel like I have the ability to rate a poetry collection, especially on that hits hard on so many personal struggles.

That being said, there are parts of this collection that resonate so deeply with me. Specifically, the poems from the section entitled Rooting – they straight up made me cry! Rupi perfectly captures and articulates the emotions and sacrifices that immigrants make – not for themselves but for their children. She also really speaks to my truth about the challenges the children of immigrants’ face in a way that I have always grappled with describing. I really just want to say ‘Thank You’ to Rupi for validating parts of me through her art.
