REVIEW: The Whisper Network – Chandler Baker

Writer: SharnSharn

When their predator boss and soon to be new CEO suddenly dies, three women are under scrutiny for his murder. Each woman has so much to lose: jobs, marriages and reputations. Through the whisper network that connects these women, they hear of their boss’s indiscretions, the people involved in covering up for him and even those who chose to look the other way.

The Whisper Network is a smart commentary on the challenges that women face on a day to day basis at work and at home. I loved the incorporation of the feminist voice along with the mystery of a thriller. However, I found it very difficult to read some parts of this book and through that it was often too quick to generalize and scrutinize the corporate work environment – not to say that it is not completely valid, just that there are many stand up exceptions and I wish more energy was spent exploring that narrative rather than villainizing men. This was also a slower-paced novel than I had expected and found most of the characters disagreeable. Even with all of my personal quarrels, I strongly believe that this is an important book and it gives voice and merit to women and should be celebrated for its accomplishments. I would highly recommend this if you’re looking for a book to give you the courage to stand up for yourself or looking for proof that the challenges you face as a woman are not made up arbitrarily in your head.
