REVIEW: We Have Always Been Here – Samra Habib 3

Writer: SharnSharn

“As a woman in this world, it is important to take up space and make yourself heard even if it intimidates and offends powerful men.”

Samra and her family came to Canada as refugees in an attempt to escape persecution from Islamic extremists in Pakistan for being Ahmadi Muslims. Canada posed a whole new set of challenges for Samra; she struggles with her faith, sexuality and her family dynamic. We Have Always Been Here chronicales Samra’s life in both Pakistan and Canada including an arranged marriage to her cousin, a second loveless marriage, her struggle with her own body and her creative drive.

This memoir explores feminism, faith, creativity, sexuality and identity in a very unique way. I really love hearing Samra talk about her life and challenges but what I enjoyed most was that Samra’s critically analyzes her experiences. This book reads like a personal journal and really explores how each of us grows and the challenges we all face. Although this is not a book I would have picked up on my own, I am glad that I read it and really found that parts of this resonated with me personally.
