Backman carefully encases the most important social issues of our generation in a passionate, funny and thoughtful story about small-town hockey. Beartown should be a mandatory read across high schools in order to help shape a generation of deliberate thinkers and compassionate individuals. This is one of the most important books that I have read in many years and I believe that it carefully brings to light issues in society that we are often more comfortable hiding under the rug.
Beartown is a story about a small town's hockey team - but more than that a small towns dream. The local hockey team is set to play in the semi-final match and has the full support of everyone in the town. The story jumps from the perspectives of players, coaches and citizens of Beartown as a way to familiarize the reader with the deeper set obstacles that face the town - obstacles which are a reflection of society as a whole.
Without giving away more than one would wish to know, I will say this: This book has the power to influence the way you think and question the way things are, all the while being entertaining, funny and quick-witted. A must read.
